Former police inspector to face trial next year in theft case (2019)

The Intermediate Court has fixed trial in the case of a former police inspector, who allegedly misappropriated BND18,300 in bail bond money while holding the position of Officer-in-Charge at the Sungai Liang Police Station, for next year.

Mohd Soffian bin Haji Kipli, 46, who hired lawyer Zainidi Abdul Hamid on Wednesday, allegedly committed the offences in 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018.

Petrol station attendant gets 11 months behind bars (2019)

A petrol station attendant was sentenced to 11 months’ imprisonment by the Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, after he pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing BND500.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Hajah ‘Adzimah Mukarramah binti Haji Salleh revealed in court that Muhammad Asyraf Shafwan bin Abdullah @ Rosdy anak Rosli, 27, had been working at the Negalang Maju Sdn Bhd Petrol Station as a pump attendant, since last April.

‘Surplus visa racket’ dupes Bangladeshi workers (2019)

Officials from the Bangladesh High Commission in Brunei Darussalam have uncovered what they described as a “surplus visa racket”, purportedly allowing Bangladeshi citizens to work in the Sultanate without the proper visa status.

The victims were found to be without jobs for as long as 10 months, after paying BND7,000-BND8,000 to labour brokers. They had sold off their lands and houses, on the promise of good wages and jobs once they arrived in the Sultanate.

Regatta Brunei set for this Sunday (2019)

The Regatta Brunei Darussalam will be held this Sunday at the Dermaga Diraja in conjunction with the 73rd birthday of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, Permanent Secretary (Safety, Welfare and Law) at the Ministry of Home Affairs (MoHA) Mohd Amir Hairil bin Haji Mahmud said on Tuesday.

The boat races will be held at 7.30am for the morning session and at 1pm for the afternoon session.
