BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN - HIS Royal Highness Captain Prince Abdul ‘Mateen yesterday marked another milestone in his military career following his promotion from lieutenant to acting captain.
A ceremony was held at the Bol-kiah Garrison Officers’ Mess, where His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, presented the new rank insignia to his son. The promotion came at the start of a new chapter for HRH Captain Prince Abdul ‘Mateen, who is set to embark on his flying training in the United Kingdom in September.
“I’m going to be doing my flying training, which will be starting next week, and I think I’ll take it step by step. I’ll try and finish this flying training, come back, specialise, then we’ll see what happens from there,” he said in an interview with local media.
HRH Captain Prince Abdul ‘Mateen also hoped to inspire the youth to join the military and called on officers in the Royal Brunei Armed Forces (RBAF) to serve as role models.
The 25-year-old prince, who was issued the service number of 920, graduated from the prestigious Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in Surrey and attained the rank of second lieutenant in April 2011 then substantive lieutenant in September 2012.
The latest promotion of acting captain for HRH Captain Prince Abdul ‘Mateen took effect from May 9, according to a statement issued by the Ministry of Defence (MinDef).
After placing the rank insignia yesterday, His Majesty, who is also the Minister of Defence and Supreme Commander of the RBAF, together with HRH Captain Prince Abdul ‘Mateen signed the royal parchments and took a group photo.

His Majesty’s arrival was greeted by Deputy Minister of Defence First Admiral (Rtd) Dato Seri Pahlawan Abdul Aziz Hj Mohd Tamit and RBAF Commander Pehin Datu Pekerma Jaya Major General Dato Paduka Seri Mohd Tawih Abdullah.
Also present were members of the Defence Executive Committee and service commanders alongside other senior officials.
