Call for fresh strategies to make Brunei cities vibrant

THE Minister of Home Affairs, Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Haji Awang Abu Bakar bin Haji Apong, urged municipal boards in the country to formulate plans to make cities more vibrant, cheerful and capable of attracting more visitors.

At the same time, the cities must initiate steps to enhance economic growth, especially by supporting micro, small and medium enterprises, said the minister.

The minister was speaking Wednesday during a dialogue session with chairmen and members of the municipal boards of Bandar Seri Begawan, Tutong, and Kuala Belait and Seria who have been appointed for a period of two years (2017 to 2019) with the consent of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam.

The meeting was held at the Brunei-Muara District Office in Old Airport, Berakas.

In his welcoming address, he highlighted the Global Liveability Ranking report released by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) which has ranked Bandar Seri Begawan as Southeast Asia’s third most liveable city after Singapore and Kuala Lumpur and 100th globally.

The minister stressed on the importance of keeping the city clean, saying that it is the best way to raise its status. Everyone including owners of commercial premises, shops and business stalls has a responsibility in ensuring cleanliness in their areas.

Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Haji Awang Abu Bakar also stressed on the importance of giving utmost attention to His Majesty’s 2018 New Year titah, highlighting three main elements of it.

Firstly, the minister noted that the glorious occasion of Golden Jubilee of His Majesty’s Accession to the Throne was also enjoyed by all levels of society, which reflected the harmonious life in the country which must be maintained so that prosperity will continue for generations to come.

Secondly, the Brunei Vision 2035 need to be kept on the right track towards creating a developed nation, he reminded.

Thirdly, he called for close cooperation from all parties to create a pro-business climate in Brunei so that more foreign investors will be attracted to the country.

In an interview, Lieutenant Colonel (Rtd) Haji Abas bin Haji Bagol, a member of the Tutong Municipal Board, told the Bulletin that development initiatives undertaken in Tutong ensure cleanliness of the city is maintained.

Shaikh Haji Khalid bin Shaikh Haji Ahmad, Kuala Belait and Seria Municipal Board member said that one of their achievements is the launching of the Golden Jubilee Recreational Park in Kuala Belait. It was contributed by the private sector in conjunction with His Majesty’s Golden Jubilee Celebration, he added.

Dato Paduka Haji Mohammad Alimin bin Haji Abdul Wahab, a member of the Bandar Seri Begawan Municipal Board, said that the private sector should work together with government sectors in making the capital city more vibrant. At the same time, the city must also maintain its value by upgrading its infrastructure heritage so that it will on par with major cities around the world, he noted.
