YB DATO Seri Paduka Awang Haji Suhaimi bin Haji Gafar, Minister of Development, underscored that the Housing Development Department’s policy is to complete the projects in time and within the allocated budget.
The key focus of the department is on providing safe, quality and affordable housing under the National Housing Scheme (RPN), he said while responding to Legislative Council (LegCo) member and Penghulu of Mukim Berakas ‘B’ YB Pengiran Haji Ali bin Pengiran Maon who raised a question on flooding issues at the National Housing Scheme area such as RPN Kampong Meragang, Kampong Tanah Jambu, Kampong Bukit Beruang and Kampong Katok ‘B’, at the 14th LegCo session Monday.
The LegCo member further questioned whether the policy of the Housing Development Department is in line with the objectives of the scheme and what actions will be taken against consultants who do not meet the specifications set for the projects.
The housing provided must have an authorised system which follows standard specifications and suit to the purpose it was built for, the minister said.
“If the contractor and the appointed consultant do not meet the design guidelines and if flooding is caused due to improper drainage design, the contractor and the consultant will be held responsible and the department will take action against them.”
The department will also ensure that restoration works are carried out in accordance with certain procedures such as Professional Indemnity Insurance (PII), the minister said, adding that to minimise flooding, the department will implement a drainage cleaning campaign regularly in flood-prone areas to ensure the smooth flow of water.
Meanwhile, LegCo member and Village Head of Kampong Labi I YB Hanapi bin Mohd Siput requested that housing applications to also prioritise single applicants who have dependents (single mother who does not work and not owning a house) and consider their application under dependent applicants.
In response to the question, YB Dato Seri Paduka Awang Haji Suhaimi said that the requirements for housing scheme specifically for single mothers have also been identified and examined under Housing Focus Group (HFG) and will be put under consideration.
