AN INDONESIAN domestic helper was on Monday sentenced to eight months’ imprisonment by the Magistrate’s Court, after she pleaded guilty to stealing from her employer.
Hayati binti Ismail Ahmad stole three designer brand watches, two bracelets, two sets of earrings, six rings, three necklaces with pendents, a pair of spectacles and a portable power bank from a family residence in Jalan Gadong, sometime this year.
Magistrate Hajah Ervy Sufitriana binti Haji Abdul Rahman said that a custodial sentence was warranted to deter both the defendant and others.
DPP Hajah Siti Mu’izzah binti Haji Sabli told the court that the family had noticed some of their jewellery was missing on the afternoon of October 28.
They casually asked the defendant whether she had seen the missing items, but later grew suspicious and searched her room.
There, in her room, they found the stolen items tucked into a small bag.
A police report was lodged, which led to the defendant’s arrest.
During investigations, the defendant admitted to stealing the items when doing her cleaning chores and while the family members were out at work.
