Minister of Development Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Suhaimi bin Haji Gafar on a working visit to Jakarta, represented His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam at the state funeral of the 3rd president of the Republic of Indonesia, Bacharuddin Jusuf (BJ) Habibie on Thursday.
Habibie passed away at the age of 83 at Gatot Subroto army hospital in Central Jakarta on Wednesday.
Accompanying Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Suhaimi to the state funeral is Ambassador of Brunei Darussalam to Indonesia Brigadier General (Rtd) Dato Seri Pahlawan Haji Yussof bin Haji Abdul Rahman.
The former Indonesian president was a well-recognised engineer. Born on June 25, 1936, he served as research and technology minister for 20 years in the administration of late president Suharto.
Habibie assumed the presidency after the resignation of Suharto in May 1998 and served until fresh elections were held in 1999. He led the post-Suharto transition and ushered in free elections, press freedom, decentralization and pluralism.
The state funeral was held at Kalibata heroes cemetery led by Indonesia President Joko Widodo.
