Work to improve conditions on a 2.8km-stretch of road from the ASEAN Bridge to the Kuala Baram Industrial Estate traffic light intersection is expected to be completed before Chinese New Year in January next year, the Borneo Post reported on Friday.
The newspaper was quoting Sarawak’s Minister of Transport Datuk Lee Kim Shin during a site inspection of milling work on the stretch of road on Friday, which is frequented by travellers from Brunei to Miri and vice-versa. The RM3.5 million project by the Public Works Department seeks to improve conditions on the uneven and bumpy road built in 2003.
“The present condition of the road from the ASEAN Kuala Baram bridge to IKBN Miri road is uneven and needs to be repaired as it is the main entry point for visitors from Brunei and Sabah,” Datuk Lee told reporters.
He explained that the milling work is the process to dig up the surface of the road where the thickness of the uneven road will be resurfaced with a new tar seal.
Lee said once the project is completed, it would smoothen traffic flow, particularly for tourists from Brunei and Sabah and also improve congestion at the Sungai Tujoh immigration checkpoint.
