MoU to enhance premium muskmelon research (2020)

Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB) and Gropoint Sdn Bhd inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at UTB yesterday to enhance the research and development of premium muskmelon in Brunei.

Under the MoU, UTB and Gropoint, a producer and exporter of specialty muskmelon, will organise training programmes for the university students and staff.

Two UTB postgraduate students under the Food Science and Technology programme of the School of Applied Sciences and Mathematics (SASM) have initiated research activities in collaboration with Gropoint and the Department of Agriculture and Agrifood (DAA) of the Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism.

They are studying and gathering data on morphological and physiological characteristics of locally grown Japanese muskmelon and conducting scientific research on packaging technology for exports of these premium fruits.

Future collaborative plans between the two partners will also include Research and Development (R&D) in the areas of marketing, post-harvest studies, disease and pest management, and food product development.

These efforts are part of the Centre for Research on Agri-Food Science and Technology’s (CrAFT) strategic plans to translate research outcomes into products and process in on-going efforts to link academia with the industries.

Present to witness the signing was UTB Vice-Chancellor and guest of honour Professor Dr Hajah Zohrah binti Haji Sulaiman.

Signing on behalf of UTB was Director of CrAFT Professor Dr Beston Nore, while Gropoint was represented by its Chief Executive Officer Lee Wei Sheng.
