Prayers against COVID-19 virus (2020)

BY Azlan Othman

Yesterday’s Friday sermon called for solidarity in offering special prayers to avert a global epidemic from the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).

Muslims were encouraged to perform the Sunnat Hajat prayer in congregation, after the Maghrib prayer and prior to the Friday prayer, in order to establish cohesive bonds in a difficult time. “The Ummah is urged to recite a Doa after performing mass prayer and not to leave the mosque before the Doa ends,” said Imams during the sermon.

“Islam is a religion of unity. Through unity, many things can be achieved, since it promotes goodwill among the community,” the Imams said.

“One of the basic pillars in upholding the unity and solidarity among Muslims is to prioritise congregational prayers in mosques.”

The outbreak of the new strain of coronavirus was first reported in Wuhan, China, last December.

Yesterday, Chinese officials said that 121 more people had died from the outbreak, bringing the death toll in China to at least 1,380; and that 5,090 new cases had been confirmed.
