Marine police personnel under the Operation Department of Royal Brunei Police Force (RBPF) foiled an attempt to smuggle 280 cartons of cigarettes through the waterways of Sungai Riong in Kampong Putat on Saturday.
Information in this regard was revealed by Marine Police Operation Officer inspector Abdul Hafizazuddin bin Haji Abdul Wahab. According to the RBPF, marine police personnel were on patrol along Sungai Putat when they discovered a suspicious boat heading towards Sungai Putat.
Noticing the presence of the police, the boat turned back in an attempt to escape.
The marine police patrol boat gave chase and found the boat abandoned at Simpang 3, Sungai Riong with 280 cartons of smuggled cigarettes of various brands.
The confiscated items were brought to the marine police.
The case was transferred to the Royal Customs and Excise Department for further investigation.
The RBPF will continue to monitor, trace and eradicate criminal activities. Public cooperation in channeling information is essential to combat crimes in the Sultanate.
