COVID-19 Brunei: Minister warns against mass gathering (2020)

BY Syazwani Hj Rosli

Regarding the recent arrest of 20 partygoers at a hotel, Minister of Health Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Mohd Isham bin Haji Jaafar said that mass gatherings should be avoided while the nation is still coping with the COVID-19 outbreak.

“Such gatherings are highly prohibited, given the close proximity of 20 people in the confined space of a hotel room, involving alcoholic beverages,” he said during a press conference at the Ministry of Health’s (MoH) Al-‘Afiah Hall.

The minister also reminded the public to follow and adhere to the advisories and tips issued by the MoH.

On the four partygoers who attempted to escape by climbing down to the third-floor room of a hotel guest undergoing self-isolation, Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Mohd Isham said, “Contact between the people and the person in self-isolation was just brief, and no quarantine is needed for them.

“After all, the person in self-isolation is not a positive patient, so no swab test is required.”
