In The Courts (2020): Sentencing in robbery case on July 8

BY Fadley Faisal

A local man pleaded guilty in the Magistrate’s Court over the weekend to robbing a foreign man, who tried to hitch a ride, at knife point.

Intermediate Court Judge Harnita Zelda Skinner fixed July 8 to hand down sentence to 35-year-old Mohammad Azhan bin Ahmad.

DPP Syazwani binti Jumat revealed in court that the defendant was driving his car towards Panaga Beach at 4.30 pm on May 29.

He then reached Panaga School and saw an Indian national waiting at a bus stop and approached him.

The defendant asked him where he was headed and offered to give him a ride to his staffhouse at Pandan 5, Kuala Belait.

They agreed on a fee, but when the victim got into the car, he tried to sit in the back of the car but eventually took the seat next to the driver’s upon the defendant’s insistence.

As they were travelling, the victim asked how much the fare was and the defendant replied BND20.

The victim said he did not have BND20 on him and told the defendant he needed to wait till he received his salary before he could pay the fare.

The defendant then reached into the compartment drawer of his car and took out a knife to threaten the victim.

The defendant then told the foreign man that he must pay or surrender his mobile phone.

The victim reluctantly chose the mobile phone.

After the victim got out of the car, the defendant made his way to a friend’s house where he sold the phone for BND30.

The victim lodged a police report on May 30 which led to the defendant’s arrest.
