In The Courts (2020): Cheating, property laundering case goes on trial in January

The Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday fixed the trial to run from January 11-14, 2021 for a Filipina who had claimed trial towards charges of cheating and offences related to it.

The charges against 35-year-old Melanie Tomas Marcos alleges her of having cheated a 35-year-old man in the pretense of having paid for three mobile phones prompting the man to hand over the phones to her at a residential area on Jalan Mumong, Kuala Belait.

The second charge alleges the defendant of having committed property laundering by selling one of the mobile phones for BND300 to a buyer at a meet-up point in the parking lot of Suri Seri Begawan Hospital, Kuala Belait at 8pm on May 28 and gaining profit from the proceeds of crime.

A third count alleges the defendant of selling the other mobile phone for BND450 to a buyer at a staff house on Jalan Tengah, Kuala Belait at 2pm on May 29 and gaining profit from the proceeds of the crime.

The fourth charge alleges the defendant of having sold the third phone to a buyer for BND650 at a meet-up point at a parking lot at 12.33pm on May 30.

Magistrate Kamaliah Fadhilah binti Haji Ibrahim presided over the case. The Public Prosecutor was represented by Deputy Public Prosecutor Dayangku Didi-Nuraza binti Pengiran Haji Abdul Latiff.
