The Marine Police of the Royal Brunei Police Force (RBPF) on Tuesday thwarted an attempt to smuggle illicit alcohol into the country, during a routine patrol of the Pulau Chermin zone.

In a press statement, the RBPF said that the incident happened at around 12.15am, when a Marine Police team was docking in the waters of Pulau Berbunut.

“The team heard the sound of a boat engine and saw a suspicious vessel passing under the Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Bridge, heading towards Sungai Bunga,” the RBPF stated.

“The vessel was a wooden passenger boat painted orange and blue, with an 85hp Yamaha engine. One person was on board.”

Sensing the police presence, the boat driver sped towards the coast of Pulau Pepatan. The team followed in pursuit, ordering him to stop, but he refused to cooperate.

The boat driver also threw several plastic packages into the water, while heading towards the Pengkalan Sibabau area.

The police retrieved the packages and found 120 cans of beer, along with 26 bottles of liquor.

The contraband items were brought back to the Marine Police Headquarters, and handed over to the Royal Customs and Excise Department (RCED) for further investigation.
