In The Courts (2020): Four-week jail for mobile phone thief

BY Fadley Faisal

The Magistrate’s Court on Monday handed a four weeks’ jail sentence to a local man after he pleaded guilty to stealing a mobile phone from a shop.

Acting Senior Magistrate Pengiran Hazirah binti Pengiran Haji Mohd Yusof saw 30-year-old Abdul Rashid bin Bujang’s commission of the offence as opportunistic, committed not out of desperation as it was a non-essential item and took into account his submission to the court.

DPP Ahmad Firdaus Mohammad revealed in court that the defendant entered a mobile phone shop at Darussalam Complex in the capital at 7.15pm on November 24 and asked to take a look at one of the phones on display. The defendant got the phone and asked the shopkeeper for its casing.

The shopkeeper showed a casing to the defendant, who expressed satisfaction with it.

He then asked the shopkeeper to reach for another casing further away. While the shopkeeper went to get the casing, the defendant fled with the phone and drove straight home.

The shopkeeper tried to give chase but to no avail. He informed his manager, who then lodged a police report.

Police investigations led to the defendant’s arrest on November 28 while he was at work. Investigations were aided by a CCTV footage.
