Brunei Darussalam’s very own Kampong Ayer was honoured with the 2nd ASEAN Sustainable Tourism Award for the Urban Sustainable Product, during the ASEAN Tourism Awards ceremony held at The Empire Brunei on Thursday.
Minister of Primary Resources and Tourism Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Ali bin Haji Apong presented the award to representatives of the Brunei-Muara District Office.
Ulu Ulu Resort and Radisson Hotel each received the 7th ASEAN Green Hotel Award, while Pekan Bangar in Temburong District received the 2nd ASEAN Clean Tourist City Award.
Meanwhile, the award recipients for the 2nd ASEAN Mice Venue Award (Meeting Room) from Brunei Darussalam were Radisson Hotel (Mutiara Ballroom), Armada Properties Sdn Bhd (Syndicate Rooms) and Tarindak D’Seni (Serambi Suluh Hall).
Managing Director of Ulu-Ulu Resort Anthony Chieng Hock Kiet said in an interview, “Hopefully this will help people understand what ‘green’ is, because we have to achieve a minimum standard to receive the Green Hotel Award.”
On the green initiatives undertaken by the resort, he said, “We did a lot of recycling and composting, and we don’t allow plastic bottles on the resort. All of our soap and shampoos are biodegradable, using fruit enzymes.” Director of Sales and Marketing for Radisson Hotel Paula Muno, said, “This is the second time that we won this award, and we would like to thank Brunei Tourism for the recognition.”
Chief Executive Officer of Armada Properties Desmond Lim said, “The award is a recognition of our efforts to make sure that our exhibition hall is in line with international standards.”
Numerous awards were also presented to major players in the tourism industry in other ASEAN member countries.
