BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN - YANG Teramat Mulia Pengiran Muda ‘Abdul Muntaqim broke his personal records in two events at the Brunei 24th Age Group Swimming Championship 2016 yesterday.
His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah, the Deputy Sultan, graced the event at the Aquatics Centre of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex in Berakas. Also present yesterday was Her Royal Highness Pengiran Anak Isteri Pengiran Anak Sarah and YTM Pengiran Anak Muneerah Madhul Bolkiah.
Swimming under the banner of the International School Brunei (ISB) Hammerheads, YTM Pengiran Muda ‘Abdul Muntaqim clocked a time of 59.21s in the boys 50 metre breaststroke (nine-year-old) category to improve on the time of 1:02:08 he set at the fourth Brunei Open Swimming Championship 2015 in November.
YTM Pengiran Muda ‘Abdul Muntaqim also broke his personal best in the boys 50 metre freestyle (nine-year-old) category after finishing with a time of 42.25s.
It bettered the previous time of 42.99 that he set at the fourth Brunei Open Swimming Championship 2015.
A total of 338 swimmers from 17 swimming clubs from Brunei and neighbouring countries are taking part at the three-day competition.
According to tournament organiser Ang Beng Siong, this year’s meet attracted a record number of entries.
“This year is a record for us as we have a total of 2063 entries in all categories,” said Ang.
“This year we managed to attract 11 local clubs, two clubs from Indonesia and four clubs from Malaysia (Sabah and Sarawak) to compete.
“It is always good to have more athletes to join, and it means that the tournament is getting more and more competitive each year,” he added.
Present to welcome HRH Prince Hj Al-Muhtadee Billah and other members of the Royal Family at the event was the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Lailaraja Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Hj Awang Halbi Hj Mohd Yusof
The other clubs competing at the tournament are the Brunei Speed Swimming Club, Dolphin Swimming Club, Gymkhana Club Miri Swimming Team, Hornbill School, Jerudong Swimming Club, Miri Amateur Swimming Association (MASA), Millennium Aquatic, MICIA Swimming Club, Panaga Stingrays, Petrolium Recreational Club, Pujut Miri Swimming Club, Royal Brunei Recreation Club, Riau Aquatic Swimming Club, Sea Dragon Swimming Club, Serians Amateur Swimming Club and Tutong District Swimming Scheme.
