BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN - RUGBY enthusiasts in the country are invited to take part in the first-ever Vipers Rugby Anniversary Open Touch Rugby Tournament.

Organised by the Vipers Rugby Football Club, the tournament will be held at the Maktab Duli Pengiran Muda Al-Muhtadee Billah football field in Gadong on May 29. The tournament will see action in the men’s open and women’s open categories, and there will be no limit to the number of teams which can join the one-day tournament.

The tournament will be first contested in a round robin format and will be followed by a knock-out system.

Registration fee is set at $80 for a maximum of 10 players in one team.

Registration forms can be obtained by emailing the organisers at  This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.  and completed forms can be submitted before May 19.

“We expect to receive 10 teams in each category. So far, only six teams have registered for the men’s category and four teams in the women’s category,” said tournament organiser Ahmad Wa’ie in an interview with The Brunei Times yesterday.

“The tournament is open to all rugby clubs in the country and we welcome all teams, including rugby clubs from schools.

“Our aim is to grow the rugby community in the country, so we urge school teams to join as this will build a platform for new rugby players to grow and be noticed by bigger club.

“In fact, this was how we started - from schools,” he added.

Established in 2012, Vipers Rugby Club started out as a team that consisted of students from different secondary schools across the country.

Ahmad Wa’ie added that the tournament aims to promote the sport and encourage a healthy lifestyle.

“We hope to get as many people into the game, and at the same time, promote a healthy lifestyle playing rugby,” he said.

“Vipers Rugby will not be playing and will only be organising the tournament for the convenience of our participants,” he added.

The top three teams will receive cash prizes, medals and certificates.
