BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN - THE Royal Brunei Police Force Sports Council (MS PDB) ‘C’ were crowned champions of the 5th NBT National Sepak Takraw Inter Regu Trophy after beating Brunei 88 ‘B’ 2-1 (21-17, 21-23, 21-19) in the final at the Menglait Sports Complex yesterday.

MS PDB ‘C’ started off strongly in the first set and edged Brunei 88 ‘B’ 21-17 before they fell 21-23 in the second set. The match could’ve gone either way in the final set but MS PDB ‘C’ players stayed calm and scored the winning shot in the last minute of the match. In an interview with The Brunei Times, newly appointed MS PDB ‘C’ assistant team manager, P/Inspector Mohd Saiful Nizam Sabli highlighted the final was a close match and praised Brunei 88 ‘B’ for giving them a tough final.

“The game could’ve gone either way, especially in the final tie-breaker set and we were very nervous,” said P/Inspector Saiful Nizam.

“Brunei 88 ‘B’ is a very tough team because they have the most experience in the sport for a very long time. “We gave our best and I’m proud of our team for staying focused throughout the matches. Brunei 88 ‘B’ gave us a fantastic final,” he added.

MS PDB ‘C’ secured their place in the final after defeating Brunei 88 ‘A’ 2-1 (21-17, 17-21, 21-17) in the semi-final on Friday while Brunei 88 ‘B’ booked their berth after beating MS PDB ‘B’ 2-0 (21-19, 21-15).

“We beat the Brunei 88 ‘A’ in the semi-finals and even then it was a tough match,” said P/Inspector Saiful Nizam.

P/Inspector Mohd Saiful Nizam has already shifted his focus to Brunei Darussalam Sepak Takraw Association (Pestabaru)’s next tournament, the 3rd Beach Sepak Takraw Regu Challenge Trophy on May 21.

“We have our eyes set on the next tournament, the beach takraw tournament next weekend,” said P/Inspector Mohd Saiful Nizam.

“So there are no rest days for us, and I hope we don’t lose focus after this win.

“We will be sending three teams - ‘A’, ‘B’ and ‘C’. So let’s see how we will do,” he concluded.

NBT (Brunei) Sdn Bhd Service Manager, Hj Mansor Hj Mohd Yassin was present as the guest of honour and presented the medals and trophies to the winners.
