BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN - AHMAD Taufiq Murni (pic) is one victory away from advancing to the quarter-finals of the BCSA (Brunei Cue Sports Association) National 9-Ball Pool Singles Championship 2016.
The competition started on Sunday, and the Sultanate’s top cueist started off with a 9-4 win over Pg Md Faiq Hafizuddin Pg Hj Jalaluddin in Group B before cruising past Md Khalid Hj Abu Bakar 9-1 at the Billiards and Snooker Hall of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium. A win against Lim Young Wee today will see him through to the next round.
Taufiq hopes to keep the momentum going especially after a strong showing against Khalid.
“I played well against Khalid and only had one miss. Hopefully I’ll be able to maintain the momentum,” said Taufiq yesterday.
“I will just play my game because he (Lim) is a very good player. We will see tomorrow (Tuesday),” added the 27-year-old.
Taufiq is also using the competition as preparations for the upcoming Golden Break 9-Ball Championship in Kuala Lumpur next month.
Hj Md Khairuddin Hj Hasnan is also a victory away from a last-eight berth after he started off with a 9-1 win over Faizzal Mohd Daud before sweeping aside Andrew Lo by the same scoreline.
Mansyur Hibri is his next opponent after he won 9-8 against Md Azri Suhardi and 9-6 against Md Haikal Qarin Hj Haironi Hamizin 9-6 respectively.
Over in Group A, Ak Md Saiful Azri Pg Roslee also won both his games starting off with a 9-1 triumph over Abd Wafiy Hj Ismail.
He made it back-to-back wins after dispatching Ak Md Hidayat Pg Hj Omar 9-3 in the second match.
Teo Chee Soon stands in his way for a spot in the knockout round. Teo had beaten Pg Anak Abd Awadi ZH Pg Anak Latifuddin 9-6 before winning Md Isa Hj Md Said 9-3 in the second game.
Md Hazwan Hasnan and Erman Fadli Amdan will also battle for a spot in the quarter-finals in the same group.
The former received a bye in the opening round before defeating Muhd Zulyadiy Jafry.
Erman edged Lim Wei Kok 9-8 in his opener before triumphing 9-5 over Mansyur Syuwari to set up the encounter.
The matches will be contested at 7.30pm. Those on the losing end will move to the losers’ bracket as the competition is held in a double knockout format.
