BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN - AHMAD Taufiq Murni was the first cueist through to the quarter-finals of the BCSA (Brunei Cue Sports Association) National 9-Ball Singles Championship 2016 after disposing Lim Young Wee 9-2 last night.

The sultanate’s top cueist needed only 70 minutes to win his match at the Billiards and Snooker Hall of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium in Berakas. Taufiq raced to a 4-0 lead before Lim pulled one rack back to get on the scoreboard.

A dry break by Taufiq in the seventh frame allowed Lim to close to within 5-2, but that was the closest he got.

Taufiq played a near flawless game with only two missed pots and hopes to carry his good form into the knockout rounds on Sunday.

“I just concentrated on my game and managed to play well,” said Taufiq in an interview with The Brunei Times after the triumph.

“I’ll have to tweak my breaks a little to be better with the new rules,” he added.

“There will be strong opponents in the next round. With a few days before the next match, I’ll continue playing at the clubs to keep my momentum going,” continued Taufiq.

Meanwhile, it was heartbreak for Ak Saiful Azri Pg Roslee after missing on the nine-ball in the final frame to lose 9-8 to Teo Chee Soon.

Hj Md Khairuddin Hj Hasnan is also through to the last-eight after beating Mansyur Hibri 9-6.

Md Hazwan Hasnan was the other cueist who secured passage into the next round last night after defeating Erman Fadli Amdan 9-2.

The four cueists who finished at the losing end will have a second chance to progress into the last-eight from the losers’ bracket with matches starting at 7.30pm tonight.

Their opponents are to be determined as results for the later match last night could not be obtained as of press time.
