RIWAYAT qualified from Group ‘A’ of the Al Idrus Football League Championship as group winners after edging KB Warriors 3-2 at the Royal Brunei Recreation Club Field.
The top-of-the-table clash saw the league’s highest scorers make a perfect four wins out of four matches while KB Warriors fell to their first defeat. Sofan Sufiyani bin Haji Sabtu presented KB Warriors the lead in the ninth minute but team captain Muhd Zainal Mari replied for Riwayat in the 23rd minute.
Mohd Hasymn bin Haji Mustafa extended the lead for Riwayat at the hour mark before Haji Affandi bin Haji Julaihi sets up a nervy finish with his goal for KB Warriors in the 76th minute.
Riwayat grabbed the headlines earlier this season after setting the record for the biggest margin of victory thanks to their 25-0 rout against Kasat Mix Veteran FT.
Meanwhile in other matches, title contenders PSJD Veteran enjoyed a 10-3 victory over IV Team in Group ‘C’ at the Tutong Sports Complex while MS Tawakal FC overcame Mix FT 6-3 in Group ‘A’ at the Sungai Kebun Sports Complex.
The Al Idrus Football League Championship continues this weekend with five teams still in the running of sealing progress to the next stage of the competition.
ITF currently occupy top place in Group ‘D’ but they face an anxious wait of seeing their name in the hat as completion of group matches means that their fate are out of their hands.
Their draw with group rivals SM FC last October could be seen as a defining moment as they now rely on other teams to make favours including Manggis FC, the opponent whom they beat to play their part of boosting their qualification hopes.
PMS, the other team in contention of making it to the next round, can book their spot with victory over basement dwellers Manggis FC this Friday in a scenario which will knock SM FC outside the qualifying places.
But a SM FC victory in their final group match against Mangellela Veteran FC will mean ITF missing out on a place in the next round.
Meanwhile in Group ‘F’, Stoneville FT and MV FT are still in contention for the final automatic berth and join already-qualified AH United.
MV FT, who play league leaders AH United need to better Stoneville result, who play basement dwellers Mengkubau United.
Shall MV FT cause an upset against favourites AH United on Friday, Stoneville – who need to match or better MV FT’s result – will need to win their final game on Sunday.
