BRUNEI Darussalam’s top ranked squash players will have a fresh challenge against the best competitors in the regional scene in the 5th Southeast Asia (SEA) Cup Squash Championship 2019 at the Kerry Sports, Shangri-La at The Fort in Manila, Philippines which begins today until April 13.
Brunei Darussalam’s Abang Md Huzairie bin Abang Md Ali, who was announced as the nation’s top ranked male player, will face Benedict Chan of Singapore in the preliminary round of the men’s singles while Brunei’s Haji Md Saiful Rizal bin Haji Md Ali will meet Philippines’ Reymark Bergonia.
The winner of the clash between Haji Md Saiful Rizal and Begornia will have to negotiate past top seed and reigning SEA Cup men’s singles gold medallist Robert Andrew Garcia, in the next round.
Brunei’s Hamidah binti Haji Ismail, who started the year as the nation’s top ranked female squash player, has been drawn against Indonesia’s Catur Yuliana in the preliminary round of the women’s singles event.
Hamidah’s compatriot Pengiran Amal Najwana binti Pengiran Haji Ali will be up against Thailand’s Anantana Prasertratanakul.
Completing the list of players representing Brunei Darussalam is Pengiran Md Khairul Amir bin Pengiran Md Alam.
The athletes are accompanied by their coach Pengiran Md Hasnan bin Pengiran Anak Haji Rozanan.
Five other nations including hosts the Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and Thailand will participate in the tournament.
The tournament aims to provide the Brunei Darussalam players more exposure and prepare them for the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in the Philippines.
Malaysia produced a double sweep in the last edition of the tournament in Bandung, Indonesia in 2018.
