ALWEN Swee Poh Ting and Zainul Amin @ Md Alamin bin Haji Mohammad emerged victorious in their men’s doubles ‘B’ match against Ermy Shahreza bin Musa and Mega Saiful Azzrin bin Ganiah with a 21-17, 21-18 victory to advance to the next phase of the Brunei Darussalam National Badminton Championship 2019 at the Multi-Purpose Hall of The Centrepoint Hotel in Gadong last night.
The pairing of Alwen Swee and Zainul Amin edged closer to victory after consolidating a nice lead on the halfway mark but Ermy Shahreza and Mega Saiful Azzrin gradually got into the game and battled back sternly with five straight points.
Trailing by a set, both Ermy and Mega Saiful went for the kill twice and succeeded on both opportunities after exchanging returns with hopes of a recovery.
However, Alwen Swee and Zainul appeared not to be fazed by signs of a comeback from their competitive opponents as they reclaimed the lead through two well-taken smashes.
Zainul’s precise shot clipped the line for match point before the pair completed the pulsating affair in straight sets under 20 minutes.
Last night saw a number of preliminary round matches contested in the men’s doubles ‘B’ as countless pairs looked to secure their place in the next draw.
The competition will resume tomorrow with the mixed doubles, veteran doubles, men’s singles and men’s doubles ‘A’ matches.
