Deputy minister attends ASEAN sports events

DEPUTY Minister of Education Datin Seri Paduka Dr Hajah Romaizah binti Haji Mohd Salleh handed over the presidency for ASEAN Schools Sports Council (ASSC) to Secretary of State of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports of Cambodia and President of the Cambodian Student Sports Federation Sar Sokha, who will begin his tenure for two years starting from 2020.

The handing over of the flag of ASSC took place at the 56th ASSC Management Committee Meeting at Ballroom Po Hotel Semarang, Indonesia.

 

The meeting was chaired by Datin Seri Paduka Dr Hajah Romaizah and attended by representatives of the 10 ASEAN member countries taking part in the 11th ASEAN School Games 2019.

The meeting also discussed the report on the 12th ASEAN School Games 2020 where the Philippines will be the host, event calender confirmation for the ASEAN School Games from 2020 to 2025 and the appointment of chairperson of the technical committee for the ASSC.

ASSC was established in 1978 and one of the biggest events hosted by the ASSC is the ASEAN School Games which took place for the first time in Thailand in 2009.

Among the main aims of the establishment of ASSC is to foster closer ties among students in ASEAN as well as forge social development through cooperation in the fields of sports and to encourage cooperation and communication through sports, as well as to contribute towards peace and stability in the ASEAN region.

It also serves to produce elite athletes in ASEAN and support the ASEAN member countries’ policy toward healthy nation through sport activities.

Earlier, the Deputy Minister of Education as the President of ASSC 2018 to 2019 also attended the opening ceremony of the 11th ASEAN School Games 2019 officiated by Indonesia’s Youth and Sports Minister Imam Nahwari at the Holy Stadium in Semarang, Indonesia.

Also in attendance was Acting Director of Co-Curriculum Education Mohamed Jais bin Haji Abdul Rahman as the Chef de Mission of Brunei Darussalam Sports Schools Council (MSSSBD) to the tournament.

This year’s MSSSBD contingent comprises 36 athletes who will compete in six sporting events – badminton, swimming, athletics, sepak takraw, pencak silat and table tennis. Ten ASEAN member countries are taking part in the 11th ASEAN School Games that has nine sporting events.
