Sixteen students from Brunei Sports School represented Brunei Darussalam at the 2nd SKAS Open Karate Championship organised by the Shotokan Karate Association of Sabah at the 1Borneo Mall in Kota Kinabalu last weekend.
The two-day long championship attracted more than 400 participants from Brunei, Malaysia, Indonesia and Iran.
The team, led by Sports School Karate Coach Mohammad Ishak bin Haji Abu Bakar, bagged two gold medals, two silver and eight bronze.
Among the highlights was the mixed team kumite event which saw the Brunei Sports School team proceed into the semi-final and bagging the bronze medal.
A special event saw the participation of veteran karatekas (above 40 years) from Brunei, Malaysia and Iran, where the Brunei team coach Mohammad Ishak bagged a bronze medal in the kata event.
The two golds from the Brunei team were won by Alexandra Jacklya Dakius and Nur Razanah Shakila in the kata events.
Mohammad Ishak is very positive that participation of the students in such competitions will help develop their potential further while being a platform for them to gain exposure in preparation for future and bigger tournaments.
He also expressed gratitude to the Brunei Sports School and Brunei Darussalam Karate-Do Federation (BRUKAF) for their support.
