Brunei Darussalam’s under-16 team concluded their campaign in the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Under-16 Championship 2020 Qualifiers with a 3-2 defeat at the hands of the Philippines at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta on Sunday.
The young Wasps took the lead in a Group G clash after defender Muhd Wafiq Danish Mohd Hasimulabdillah netted in the 15th minute.
However, the Philippines drew level in the 55th minute after defender David Nicolo De Leon Pahud buried home a header after connecting from a well-taken corner by Simon Andrei Ruela Del Campo.
The young Azkals came close in taking the lead when Kamil Jaser Rendon Amirul let rip a fine effort from outside the box but Brunei were rescued by the post.
The Philippines went in front after Umi Martin Luna Abelarde fired home a decent strike having received a cutback from Uriel Reyes Dalapo.
The Philippines’ goal-scorer made a misplaced pass after his teammate let the ball to roll freely, enabling Awangku Md Idzzaham Aleshahmezan bin Pengiran Metali to slide the ball through for the advancing Md Syaherrul Affendy bin Md Syahmirul Nizam.
The forward still had work to do as David Nicolo gave chase but the Tabuan teenager kept his composure to steer the ball past the Philippines’ shot-stopper.
Uriel Dalapo capped a fine display after he followed up his assist for Umi Martin with the winner for the Philippines in the 84th minute.
