Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) Regatta Team produced a good showing in the inaugural UNIMAS International Regatta 2019 at the UNIMAS Lake, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) recently.

UBD finished third in the men’s and mixed categories in the King of the Lake event, as well as third place finishes in the men’s and mixed categories in the Dragon Boat League event.

Tanjung Pura University (UNTAN) from Indonesia cemented their status as the King of the Lake after finishing top in each category.

In the King of the Lake event, hosts UNIMAS finished runners-up in both the men’s and mixed categories.

UNIMAS also settled for a runner-up place in both the men’s and mixed categories of the Dragon Boat League event.

Director of UNIMAS Sports Centre and Chairman of the UNIMAS International Regatta 2019 Executive Committee, Professor Dr Azhaili bin Baharun, said the success of organising the tournament marked a starting point to organise it on a large scale next year.

He hoped that more public and private higher education institutions in Malaysia will compete in the event.

“UNIMAS also plans to extend an invitation to universities from Singapore, Thailand, the Philippines and Australia,” he said.

He added that the competition featured teams from neighbouring countries from Indonesia (UNTAN) and Brunei Darussalam (UBD) alongside University Malaysia Sabah Labuan International Campus (UMSKAL), UiTM Sarawak and Sarawak Sports Corporation (SSC).

Technical officer from Singapore Jason Kho said, “UNIMAS is very fortunate to have a big and wide lake. Various water sports activities can be held whether it is at a national or international level.

“If UNIMAS plans to organise the race again next year, my party will help promote the championship and attract participation from Singapore universities.”
