DPMM FC head coach Adrian Pennock emphasised the importance of last Saturday’s 1-0 win against Hougang United in the Singapore Cup at the Jalan Besar Stadium in Singapore.

DPMM FC forward Andrei Varankou’s goal in the 80th minute proved enough to send his team to the top of Group ‘B’ and in pole position for qualification to the knock-out stage.

“To win 1-0 is a big result for us. When you bring Belanda (Razimie Ramlli) on, he’s very honest and obviously Andrei (Varankou), Johnny (Shahrazen Said) and Adi Said worked their socks off,” said Pennock in a post-match interview with the Singapore media. The head coach also reiterated the apparent strengths, in particular the Cheetah’s attacking firepower.

He said, “It’s always going to be tight. They are a very good side and we know they are a good side. They are also very good going forward.”

The Brunei-based outfit will look to secure their berth in the semi-final when they play reigning holders Albirex Niigata (S) – fresh off a 2-0 win against Geylang International – tomorrow.

“We got to move on and look forward to Albirex Niigata (S) on Wednesday,” said the former Gillingham manager.

Meanwhile, Pennock’s opposite number Hougang United head coach Clement Teo expressed his frustrations after his side drew a blank.

“Sometimes when you create chances and whatever you do you can’t score, so this is something which is frustrating but this is football,” he said.

The Cheetahs face a test to qualify out of the group as they meet Geylang in their final group match.

Teo knew what is required of his team to make it through to the next round after his side dropped to third in the group.

Asked if his team could bounce back from a tough defeat, he said, “We have to. There’s no doubt about it.”

He added, “Of course we want to go all the way to the final and if it is possible to win the cup. There’s no two ways about it.”
