Brunei under-19 team set for AFC meet in Cambodia (2019)

The Brunei Darussalam under-19 national team left the country on Thursday to take part in the 2020 Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Under-19 Championship qualifiers at the National Olympic Stadium in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, which will be held on November 2-10.

The 23-member squad are goalkeepers Md Riyan Aiman bin Jali, Mohd Danish Aiman bin Mardianni and Abdul Taufik bin Talip; defenders Muhd Khairunnaas bin Khalid, Muhd Haziq Hafizhan bin Hardi, Md Naqiuddin bin Abdullah Nordin, Daniyal bin Mohd Zinin, Md Aisan Aisamuddin bin Abdullah Md Aiman, Maverick Lim Soon Heng, Md Nazhan bin Zulkiflie and Md Nazry Aiman bin Azman; midfielders Md Syahmi Fadhlillah bin Mohd Helmi, Mohd Eddy Shahrol @ Khairol Izzat bin Haji Omar, Muhd Aqil Ikhwan bin Azman, Mohd Hilmi bin Sidik, Md Noorsherzaman bin Haji Hasan Ahmad, Md Wafiq Naqiuddin bin Md Zain, Mohd Hadif Aiman bin Haji Adanan and Md Bazli bin Aminuddin; as well as forwards Md Aminuddin bin Haji Masri, Md Aisan Aizuddin bin Abdullah Md Aiman, Md Syafiq Safiuddin bin Abdullah Shariff and Rozandy anak Bujang.

Two 15-year-olds Md Nazry Aiman from DPMM FC Under-16 and Aqil Azman from Tabuan Muda are the squad’s youngest members.

The majority of the team are made up of players from DPMM FC Under-19 team with nine and eight from Kasuka FC Under-19 team while three players from Kota Ranger Under-19 are also represented.

The delegation will be led by Matussin bin Sumpong as team manager and accompanied by head coach Mohd Ikhmarol Izzat bin Haji Omar as well as other members of the coaching staff.

The team took part in their final training session in Brunei Darussalam on Wednesday before they left for the Cambodian capital on Thursday, where they will resume the final stages of their pre-tournament preparations. The Young Wasps have been drawn in Group ‘G’ alongside Northern Mariana Islands, Malaysia, Thailand and hosts Cambodia.

Brunei will begin their campaign against Northern Mariana Islands tomorrow before meeting Thailand two days later and Malaysia on November 6.

The Under-19 team will conclude their group stage play against Cambodia on November 10.

Brunei last made an appearance in the previous edition of the qualifying competition in October 2017, where they finished fifth in Group ‘F’ after one draw and three losses.

The Brunei team picked their first point of that competition in the 2-2 draw against Timor-Leste in the final group game at the Paju Public Stadium in Paju, South Korea.
