Brunei Darussalam’s under-19 team endured a tough 9-0 defeat as Thailand ran riot in the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Under-19 Championship Qualifiers 2020 at the National Olympic Stadium in Phnom Penh, Cambodia on Monday.
The Young Wasps came into the match on the back of a 4-3 win against Northern Mariana Islands last weekend while Thailand were the fresher side playing in their first match.
The Young War Elephants did not take long to take the lead and underline their superiority as forward Suphanat Mueanta opened the scoring in the second minute.
Mueanta played the role of chief tormentor as he doubled his side’s lead in the 14th minute before his strike partner Waragon Thongbai added Brunei’s woes with his team’s third of the game in the 29th minute.
The tie was already long gone as a contest by the time defender Jakkrapong Sanmahung grabbed his side’s fourth in the 36th minute.
Muenta completed his hat-trick in the 43rd minute to put Thailand into a commanding 5-0 lead at the interval.
Just three minutes after the restart, the rampant Thais resumed their goal-scoring frenzy as Kittiphong Khetpara added his name on the score-sheet.
Muenta, who laces up for Thai League 1 giant Buriram United at club level, capped a superb performance with his fourth of the game in the 57th minute.
Thailand under-19 midfielder Airfan Doloh got into the act with the country’s eighth goal before Purachet Todsanit compounded Brunei’s misery with a late penalty.
The Young Wasps will play Malaysia in their next group game tomorrow before they conclude their campaign against hosts Cambodia on Sunday.
