Two young national shuttlers and one assistant coach from the Co-curriculum Education Department left the country to participate in the Badminton Asia Under-17 and Under-15 Junior Championships 2019 at the GOR Badminton Sudirman in Surabaya, Indonesia.
The championships, which will take place from today until December 15, marked the first appearance of the Brunei Darussalam Sports School Council (MS SSBD).
Acting Director of Co-Curriculum Education Muhammad Norilham bin Haji Jais bade the MS SSBD team contingent farewell at the Brunei International Airport on Monday night.
The badminton athletes comprise Mohammad Hakeem Rahimee bin Bakar from Lambak Kiri Secondary School and Muhammad Izzuddin bin Ermadena from Sports School, who will be competing in the singles and doubles’ under-15 events. The pair was accompanied by manager and coach Budiman bin Ambai.
Mohammad Hakeem Rahimee and Muhammad Izzuddin are athletes who have been identified with potential to provide competition in the 14th ASEAN School Games, which will be held in Brunei in 2022.
They have also competed in the 10th ASEAN School Games in Malaysia and the 11th ASEAN School Games in Indonesia.
Both athletes have attended continuous training through the Co-Curriculum Education Department Badminton Scheme and the Sports School Badminton Scheme.
Through this participation, it is hoped that they can add on to their competition experience in the regional and international level for coaches to evaluate their capabilities and to provide competition as well as to obtain a ranking in the Badminton Asia Junior.
