Brunei Darussalam Wushu Team athletes bagged three gold medals in the opening day of the International Virtual Wushu Championship 2020 organised by the Indonesian Wushu Association (PBWI) on Tuesday.
National athlete Basma Lachkar won gold in the Group ‘A’ girls’ taijiquan event after faring better than her rival Puteri Graciela from Yasanis with a score of 9.37 points.
Her national teammate Hosea Wong Zheng Yu took the gold medal in the Group ‘A’ boys’ taijiquan event after outscoring Jevon Lionel Koeswoyo of Yasanis with a score of 9.36 points.
In the morning session, Walid Lachkar won the team’s first gold medal in the Group ‘A’ boys’ changquan event.
Walid scored 9.09 points ahead of Angus Quek Ngee Hering of Wufang Singapore who tallied 9.04 points and Albertus Ivan Wijaya of Laba Laba Sakti with 8.96 points.
The Brunei team also collected one silver medal through Abel Lim Wee Yuan in the Group ‘B’ boys’ gunshu event and two bronze medals through Lim Wei Jun in the Group ‘C’ changquan event and Lim Wei Yuan in the Group ‘B’ changquan event.
Brunei coach Li Hui said that the virtual competition provided an opportunity for athletes to revive their competitive spirit.
Supported by Indonesia’s Ministry of Youth and Sport, the virtual international competition attracted participants from Brunei Darussalam, Singapore, Macau, South Korea, China, Kazakhstan and hosts Indonesia. The ongoing tournament represents a unique experience as the performances are live streamed online from various countries due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The Brunei athletes performed their routines at the Multi-purpose Hall of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex.
