Big Wall brings splash of colour to capital (2021)

BY James Kon

Members of the public will have more reason to visit the heart of Bandar Seri Begawan, following the completed third phase of The Pedestrianisation of Jalan Roberts and Adjacent Alleyways.

The project, featuring a painted mural on the side of a building next to the old Borneo Cinema, was officially inaugurated by Minister of Home Affairs Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Haji Awang Abu Bakar bin Haji Apong and Minister of Development Dato Seri Setia Ir Awang Haji Suhaimi bin Haji Gafar on Sunday.

Known as the Big Wall, the mural is an initiative of the Bandar Seri Begawan (BSB) Municipal Department under the Ministry of Home Affairs (MoHA), together with the Ministry of Development (MoD), as part of the efforts to brighten up the capital.

Six craftsmen from Guerrilla Artchitects Studio, Shop and Gallery, along with four guest artists, were tasked with completing the mural within a three-week period, from December 17, 2020, to January 8, 2021.

Speaking on behalf of Guerrilla Artchitects Studio, Shop and Gallery, Mohammad Ariff bin Haji Suhaimi describing his relief on completing the Big Wall, said, “I am both grateful and overwhelmed. I feel grateful to have such a wonderful team for support and in helping execute the project.

“One of the many challenges we faced was the design process, because we needed to come up with an appropriate conceptual design.”

The Big Wall exhibits aspects of Brunei Darussalam’s national identity, such as tropical rainforests and the iconic Kampong Ayer, in strong and lively colours.

The project was also completed with the support of the BSB Municipal Department and the Public Works Department (JKR) as well as the involvement of several agencies.
