BRUNEI Darussalam Sports School Council (MSSSBD) will make their first foray in the basketball event in the ASEAN School Games (ASG) 2018 in Shah Alam, Malaysia from July 19-27.

“We are sending a basketball team for the first time to compete in the ASEAN School Games in Kuala Lumpur,” said team head coach and manager Brendan Chen Yew Chu in a press conference at the Brunei Basketball Association Court in Batu Bersurat last Tuesday night.

Brendan said that the players have been chosen from the previous National Inter-School Tournament sponsored by Easyway and organised by MSSSBD and Co-curriculum Education Department (JPKK).

“The 12 selected players come from across all the schools in Brunei. From their performances, we took the best players in their respective positions from the tournament to try out and come to our training.

“These are the ones who stuck by our training and attended all the sessions and showed their talent on court,” he said.

Brunei will be joined by Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia, the Philippines and Malaysia.

Brendan has identified the Philippines and Malaysia as strong candidates for the title.

The MSSSBD team expressed their excitement of taking part in the under-18 tournament and will be hoping to pull a surprise or two during their regional stint.

“We feel excited but we tempered our expectations. We know that the other teams are stronger than us but we are there to try to compete as underdogs. Maybe we can surprise but we will try out best.”

MSSSBD have been taking part in exhibition matches in preparation for the tournament and has added a competitive feel in the inter-district tournament where they competed against older and experienced players.

Yesterday also saw the handing over of jerseys whereby the basketball team will be wearing yellow or white depending on the shirt allocation of the teams.

“We want thank Easyway for providing us the sponsorship,” he further added.

The basketball team will be captained by Lim Shi Wei who plays for the Sultan Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien College.

The selected players are Lim Shi Wei, Jayden Chen Vui Syn, Yeo Jiun Jet, Md Darwish Aiman bin Anizam, Hamza bin Harif, Hadi bin Haji Abdul Jamal, Md Nazif bin Md ‘Azmin, Md Rahimin bin Jasmin, William Ching Wei Ren, Lim Chun Teng, Kenneth Lee Zse Jet and Kon Yee Hung.

Present during the press conference were Assistant Chef de Mission for MSSSBD for ASEAN School Games 2018, Haji Eady Sardi bin Pehin Datu Derma Sakti Dato Paduka Haji Abdul Razak and a representative from Easyway Tea & Cafe, Wira Pori.
